While topping is lower risk than bottoming (putting a penis in your anus), there is still risk involved in topping. Especially since a lot of tops also bottom (see im versatile). Tops are at risk for hiv and other sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis. hiv-negative gay and bisexual men at risk of getting hiv should consider pre-exposure prophylaxis (prep). Prep is when people who dont have hiv but who are at risk of getting hiv take hiv medicine every day to reduce their chances of hiv infection. however, anal sex is also one of the ways women can get hiv. During anal sex, the partner inserting the penis is called the insertive partner (or top), and the partner receiving the penis is called the receptive partner (or bottom). We know that for hiv transmission to be possible, a fluid that contains hiv must come into contact with specific parts of the body that are vulnerable to hiv infection. If an hiv-negative person has insertive anal sex with an hiv-positive partner, rectal fluid containing hiv can come into contact with the urethra andor the penis foreskin.
